When you first introduce solids at 6mths, it typically is just a few bites at first... it's more for the practice than for a 'meal'. Over time (at least a few wks) you can move up to a full jar of baby food at a sitting. I found lunch time the best part of the day for my girl, as she was the hungriest around then. So I would say 1 jar or less at 6mths. A lot of parents push too hard on baby food, when breastmilk/formula should remain the main source of food for your baby until at least 9mths. From 9mths it should still remain at least half of their daily intake, but solids become more and more important. Take your time, and introduce new food slowly.
Additional note: Uh, YES, babies can overeat. There are a number of OBESE babies that will become OBESE adults due to overeating. There are a lot of studies out there - particularly important now that over 1/4 of children and adults are obese. We arent talking pudgy, with a little extra baby fat, we are talking obesity here. Giving your baby as much as they will take is not a good idea, and can set them up for obesity later in life.
